Garbage (ごみ gomi) is handled differently in Japan than many parts of the world. Specifics about how garbage is handled depends largely on where you live.

Every municipality has special garbage bags (指定ごみ袋 shitei gomi-bukuro) for one or all types of garbage. You can find these special bags at convenience/grocery stores throughout Shimane.

You may have to write your name on each bag; if your garbage is found to be inappropriately sorted, it may be returned to you. (In practice, however, this is rarely enforced.)

The various kinds of garbage are only collected on certain days according to a schedule distributed by the town or city, which is usually revised every April.
